This book has some fun alternatives to the same ole book assignments. The are also good for a quick review of a topic.
Ok, nothing special.
I'm using this book as a summer review packet for my son, not in a classroom, so I only have one student to test it on (he's 11).
The concise explanations & examples at the top of the page (or on the whole page ) ) are great. They are not enough to teach a completely new topic to a student, but are just right to remind someone about a topic and also to show the kind of answers the following exercises are going to be looking for.
I'd say the exercises are on the lower challenge side for Precalculus, but I'm not a math teacher, so it's hard for me to judge what an average level of difficulty would be in a classroom, and for a Summer review packet, that's fine. If nothing else, it makes for quick solving, which is a bonus in our case.
The feature of "spell a message" or "solve a labyrinth" is a cute addition, although my son sometimes uses it as a crutch to avoid actually solving the problems (and picks the right-looking ones based on those hints instead). I think that's fine -- it's teaching him to tell at a glance what may be the solution and then to test it, but it's something to be aware of if you are aiming for true "must solve this" assignment.
I took off one star for some mistakes.
Pros
-- clear and concise explanations & examples at the top of the page
-- good range of topics from Precalculus
-- cute additional "find the name of this person" or "spell out the message" features on many of the pages
Cons
-- mistakes (that can also scramble the "spelled out message" part and make it more frustrating for a student)
The problem sets are adequate, answers to every set are given on the last pages. The problem is that this booklet contains only 48 pages, including one page for copyright and publisher data and one page for the table of contents. The problem sets, IMHO, fail to justify the price.
